Deep in the heart of London exists a vibrant underground urban jazz scene, where young genius musicians come to congregate, create and honour the greats that came before them.
The wunderkind known as Urahara Mitchell Piano - a pitch perfect avant-garde pianist known for his colour-outside-the-lines approach to sound - is a fixture on this very circuit - a unique player informed as much by Nat King Cole and Wayne Shorter as he is by hip-hop, video game compositions and Studio Ghibli.
Multi-faceted (he also produces, illustrates and is currently writing a book about his life philosophy) he also freestyles, making for an electric presence on stage.
He has played for a wide and eclectic list of artists in prestige UK venues and festivals, such as the Village Underground (Nadia Rose), The Electric (opening for Teedra Moses), Jazz cafe (Bashiyra the Voice), Ronnie Scott’s and Chingfest 2019 (Nao, Rose Gray and Incognito headlining) to note a few, in addition to residencies held in Dubai, Singapore and Brazil.
He will be headlining at Jao Tim’s on Saturday 18th January, alongside the incredible Arthur Kam, the first drummer outside the US to win the Modern Drummer Magazine’s Undiscovered Drummer Award in 2008, who has played alongside Datuk Siti Nurhalisa, Jaclyn Victor, Zainal Abidin, M. Nasir, Faizal Tahir, Dayang Nurfaizah and Cory Henry (from one of the core members of Snarky Puppy, a highly acclaimed, Grammy Award winning instrumental ensemble), Hong Kong superstar Jacky Cheung.
Completing the instrumental lineup is legendary Berklee alumnus Rozhan Razman (bass), who has appeared in shows and festivals in America, Japan, Korea, China, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Kazakhstan, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Dubai and India.
Locally, he has worked with artists such as Siti Nurhaliza, Zainal Abidin and Sheila Majid to name a few. And receiving AIM and Boh Cameronian Awards with artists he worked with, NJWA, Metalasia, Poova and 50 Cent Jazz Club. In the 13 years spent between Boston and NYC, he worked with names such as Solange, Monica, Steve Gadd, Wayne Krantz, Dave Binney, Chris Potter, Bilal, Me’shelle N’degeochello and Joe Hisaishi.
Frontlining the experience will be Janine Annice from London, a singer who has collaborated with musicians from widely varying backgrounds such as Erik Hargrove (drummer, James Brown) and Steve Thornton (percussionist, Miles Davis) to Tony Parker (drummer, Wang Lee Hom) and Abel Addington (bass, Liam Payne).
